ADHD Testing in Eugene, Oregon: What I Do and Don't Provide

I do not test for ADHD and I do not diagnose it. Here is what I would tell you on the phone, written down so you do not have to make the call to find out.

What I Cannot Do

No testing, no assessment, no evaluation, no diagnosis. I also cannot write documentation that depends on a diagnosis I did not make, and I cannot refer you for medication, because I am not a prescriber.

Plenty of directory listings blur this line, and people end up paying for an intake session to discover it. I would rather lose the appointment than waste your money.

If you already have a diagnosis from someone else, that is different. Bring it, and we can work with it.

What ADHD Evaluation Usually Involves

It is less mysterious than the word testing suggests. Most evaluations include a detailed history going back to childhood, standardized rating scales completed by you and often by someone who knows you well, and a clinical interview. Some include computerized attention tasks or broader cognitive testing, particularly if a learning difference is also a question.

For children, information from school matters a great deal, because attention looks different across settings and a report from one setting alone is thin evidence.

For adults, the childhood history piece is the part people worry about most. If nobody documented anything and your memory is patchy, that is common and evaluators know it. Old report cards help if they exist, and their absence is not disqualifying.

Who Provides It, and How to Ask

Depending on what you need, ADHD evaluation may be done by a psychologist, a neuropsychologist, a psychiatric provider, or in some cases a primary care physician or pediatrician using standardized measures. If medication is part of what you are considering, a prescribing provider is usually the more direct route, since they can both evaluate and treat.

Ask three things when you call: do you evaluate people my age, what does your process include, and what will the report be able to document. If you plan to request accommodations at a university or workplace, ask that institution what documentation they require before you pay for anything.

Waits are real here. Getting on a list while you keep looking is not wasted effort.

The Part Nobody Tests For

A diagnosis explains a pattern. It does not undo what the pattern cost. Most adults who arrive at ADHD late are carrying years of being called lazy, careless, dramatic or unmotivated, and a great deal of quiet effort spent hiding how hard ordinary things are.

That layer is therapy work, and it does not require a report to begin. Neither does the practical layer: externalizing memory, building systems that survive a bad week, learning what your attention actually responds to instead of what it is supposed to respond to.

For children, much of the useful work happens with parents: reading behavior as communication rather than defiance, and asking a school for something reasonable in language the school can act on.

What I Can Offer

ADHD-focused therapy for children, teenagers and adults, in person in downtown Eugene or by telehealth anywhere in Oregon. Executive function support, shame that has built up over years, work and school, relationships, and the overlap with autism that shows up in so many people.

I do not give medical advice and I do not discuss medication choices. If medication is a question, a prescriber or your physician is the right person, and I am glad to work alongside them.

Start with a free 30-minute call. If testing is what you actually need, say so and I will help you aim at it instead.
