# Parenting Support and Coaching

Every behavior your child is showing you is an active communication. Their little bodies can't always have the words. So when they're behaving some way, they're telling you something. Now it's your turn to figure out what that is.

## Behavior Is the Message

That line above is the whole orientation of this work. A child who melts down at the grocery store, refuses a coat, hits a sibling, goes silent after school or cannot get out of the car in the morning is not being difficult at you. They are reporting something with the only equipment they have.

The hard part is that the report is in code. The same behavior can mean hungry, overwhelmed, frightened, humiliated at school, sensory-flooded, or genuinely testing whether you will hold a limit. Reading it accurately changes what you do next, and doing the right thing at the wrong moment often works no better than doing nothing.

So we get curious before we get strategic. What happened in the twenty minutes before. What the room sounded like. What the day held. Patterns show up quickly once you start looking, and most parents are already collecting the data without realizing it.

## What Sessions Look Like

Parenting support is usually just you, without your child in the room, which lets you say true things you would not say in front of them. Sometimes it runs alongside your child's own therapy. Sometimes it is the only piece needed, and the child never comes in at all.

We work on specific moments rather than parenting in general. Bedtime. The morning. Homework. The handoff at the door. Screens. The sibling war at five o'clock. We look at what you have already tried, including the things that half worked, because those usually contain the answer.

You will not get a script to run at your child. You will get a way of reading them, some language that tends to lower the volume, and a couple of things to try this week that we will look at together next week.

## Limits Without Losing the Relationship

Understanding what a behavior means does not mean allowing anything. Children need limits and are often relieved by them. What we work on is holding a limit while staying connected, so the child learns that the boundary is about the behavior and not about whether they are still loved in the room.

That is easier to describe than to do at seven in the evening. It usually requires the adult to be regulated first, which is why so much of parenting work is actually about the parent's own nervous system. If you have nothing left, no technique will hold.

We also talk about repair, which is the part most people were never taught. You will lose your temper. Repairing it afterward, out loud, teaches your child more about relationships than never losing it would have.

## Neurodivergent Kids and Kids Who Have Been Through Something

For autistic and ADHD children, behavior is even more likely to be misread as willfulness when it is capacity. A child who cannot start a task is not refusing it. A child who explodes at a change in plan is not being spoiled. Accommodation is not lowering standards. It is aiming at the right target.

For children who have experienced harm or loss, safety and trust are underneath every behavior, and the usual advice about consequences frequently backfires. What worked for a friend's child may be exactly wrong for yours.

Parents of these kids also get more unsolicited opinions than anyone. Part of this work is helping you hold your own read of your child against the noise, including the noise from people who love you.

## What I Do Not Do

I do not diagnose, test, assess or evaluate, not for autism, ADHD, or anything else. If you want a formal answer, you need an evaluating provider, and I can talk with you about what that path usually involves.

I do not provide custody evaluations, parenting-capacity assessments, court recommendations or expert testimony, and I do not provide ABA.

I am a Licensed Professional Counselor in Oregon, in person in Eugene or by telehealth anywhere in Oregon.
