# Late-Diagnosed Autism and ADHD

Something explained forty years in an afternoon. Now you have to decide what to do with everything that came before it.

## How People Find Out

It rarely arrives in a doctor's office first. It arrives when your child is identified and the description sounds like your childhood. It arrives during a burnout, when the coping you never named stopped working. It arrives from a friend, a colleague, a long night of reading, or a video that describes your inner life so precisely that you put the phone down.

Then comes a long, quiet period of checking. Reading, comparing, doubting, deciding you are exaggerating, and starting again. Almost everyone I meet has gone through that stretch privately before they say it out loud to anyone.

## Grief and Relief Arrive Together

The relief is real. There is an explanation, and it is not that you are weak or careless or a bad friend. Whole decades reorganize themselves around it in a few days.

The grief is also real, and people are often unprepared for how sharp it is. Grief for the schooling that could have gone differently, the jobs you left, the friendships that thinned, the years you spent in an argument with yourself. Anger at the adults who saw something and said nothing, or who saw it and called it laziness. Sadness about the version of your life that might have existed with support.

Both belong here, and neither has to be resolved before the practical work begins. We give the grief actual room, because rushing past it tends to send it somewhere less useful.

## Telling People, or Not

There is no obligation to announce anything. We work out who benefits from knowing and who does not. A partner usually does. A manager might, depending on the workplace and what you want to change. Adult children, parents and old friends are their own decisions, and some people never tell anyone outside the room.

We also plan for the responses. You do not seem autistic. Everyone is a little ADHD. But you have a job and a family. Those land harder than people expect, and having a short, sturdy sentence ready makes them easier to absorb.

## What Actually Changes

The changes are usually smaller and more concrete than people imagine. You stop scheduling three demanding things in one day. You start using the noise-canceling headphones in public. You let a task take the form that works instead of the form you were taught. You allow recovery time and stop calling it laziness.

Relationships shift because you can finally describe what is happening rather than apologizing for it. Work shifts, sometimes into accommodations, sometimes into a different job. Self-talk shifts slowest of all, and that is often the real work of the first year: dismantling forty years of a voice that had one explanation for everything.

Many people are looking at both autism and ADHD at once, since they frequently occur together and pull in different directions: needing routine and being bored by it, craving novelty and being flattened by change. We hold both instead of picking one.

## About Formal Diagnosis

I do not diagnose, assess, test or evaluate. If a formal diagnosis matters to you, for accommodations, for documentation, or for your own certainty, you will need an evaluating provider, and I can talk with you about what that process usually involves and whether it is worth pursuing for your situation.

Self-identification is welcome here. Therapy does not wait on paperwork. Sessions are in Eugene or by telehealth across Oregon, starting with a free 30-minute call.

What We Work Through

- The long private checking period
- Grief for what support would have changed
- Who to tell, and how
- Reorganizing work around real capacity
- Rebuilding self-talk after decades
- Autism and ADHD together, pulling opposite ways

Next Step

## Start With a Free 30-Minute Call

A short conversation so I can hear what is going on and we can decide together whether this is the right room for it.
