# Autism Therapy for Teens

Adolescence asks an autistic teenager to do the hardest social work of their life, on someone else's schedule, in a building designed for noise.

## Starting Where Your Teen Is

Teenagers usually arrive because an adult decided they should. I take that seriously. The first sessions are about whether this is bearable, not about progress. Your teen can talk, not talk, play a game while we talk, bring their music, keep their hood up, or spend a session telling me in great detail about the thing they actually care about.

That last one is not a detour. Interests are how a lot of autistic teens think, connect and settle. I would rather learn what someone loves than extract a feelings word from them.

## Identity: Autistic, and Now What

Some teens have known they are autistic since they were small. Some found out recently and are furious that nobody told them. Some found the language online, are fairly sure it is them, and have not said it out loud to an adult yet.

All of those are workable. The questions underneath tend to be the same. Am I broken or am I different. Do I tell people. What do I do with the years I spent believing I was failing at something everyone else found easy. Who am I when I stop performing.

Many teens are also working out gender or sexuality at the same time, and both belong in the room without either being treated as the problem.

## School, Friendships and the Cost of Fitting In

School is where most of the load sits: the hallways, the group work, the unwritten rules, the teacher who thinks the accommodation is a favor. Many autistic teens hold it together all day and fall apart the moment they get home, and then get told they are fine at school so this must be about the house.

We work on the real mechanics. How to leave a class when you need to. What to say when a friend group turns. How to tell the difference between someone being blunt and someone being cruel. When a friendship is worth the energy and when it is quietly costing everything.

I do not teach social skills as a script for passing. Skills are useful; performing neurotypicality all day is not a life. We look for the version that gets your teen what they want without asking them to disappear.

## Self-Advocacy, in Words That Are Theirs

Self-advocacy at this age is concrete: asking a teacher for instructions in writing, telling a coach that the whistle is unbearable, saying no to a party without a story, explaining a shutdown to a friend afterward. We rehearse it, we adjust it, and we accept that it will not always go well.

Where it helps, parents come in for part of a session so the family can agree on the language rather than having it negotiated in the middle of a hard moment.

## Boundaries of This Work

I do not diagnose, assess, test or evaluate for autism. If your teen wants a formal diagnosis, an evaluating provider handles that, and therapy can run alongside it.

I do not provide ABA. Sessions are held in Eugene or by telehealth anywhere in Oregon, which some teens strongly prefer.

What We Work On

- Identity after a recent or long-known diagnosis
- School load, shutdowns and after-school collapse
- Friendships, conflict and online life
- Self-advocacy language they will actually use
- Burnout, sleep and regulation
- Parents brought in when it helps, not by default

Next Step

## Start With a Free 30-Minute Call

A short conversation so I can hear what is going on and we can decide together whether this is the right room for it.
